Sunrise Way
Helping to Create a Balanced Lifestyle

Sunrise Way project objectives

  • The facilities were to be of the highest quality.
  • The programs were to be tailored to the individual; the concept of “one shoe fits all” would not be embraced.
  • It would not be a “drop in” centre. Applicants would need to be detoxed in a separate facility, and then interviewed by a panel with experience in this area before approval was forthcoming for admission.
  • The period of residency would be based on the individual need by the resident.
  • The philosophy would be based on a solid set of values, as tabled, and could be described as authentic or spiritual values rather than religious values.
  • Residents requesting any specific religious support would be directed to the appropriate faith and supported in it.
  • No commercialism, or naming rights were to be part of the day to day operation.
  • The intent was to have the operation as authentic as practically possible. (i.e. - No distortion by association – not organisational biased)
  • The centre was to have the feel and ambience of a warm welcoming home, and not that of an institution.
  • There would be no discrimination re background or race, and residents facing prosecution in the legal system would be accepted, however they must face legal process and be accountable and would be supported by the centre in whatever way was necessary and considered appropriate.
  • Indigenous residents would have access to a respected elder/s from a recognized local tribe wherever possible as one mentor and for support.
  • Smoking would be allowed in specific external DOSA areas.
  • Commercial television would not be available to residents, all programs would be taped and under the control and guidance of the administration.
  • Behaviours that would not be tolerated in any area on site (i.e. residents, staff, volunteers etc) that would result in instant dismissal are:
    • Illegal drug use on site.
    • Sexual relationships developed.
    • Severe violence or any out of control behaviours resulting in damage to persons or property.
