The 20 proposed foundation values guiding the operation of Sunrise Way are below. These values are the platform for the living principles that embody Sunrise Way as a re-establishment facility for human beings in genuine need.

Skills to be learned

Interpersonal skills identified as important by Sunrise Way Board and planned to be encouraged in the Residents to enable them to make more mature choices in their daily lives and activities are provided below.
The Sunrise Way Board planned that Residents will be given the support and opportunities to develop the following character traits:

  1. Individuality The need to overcome peer pressure; to do this, leadership (self) and assertiveness training is needed. (Understanding the opportunity self control provides; i.e. conflict resolution within self.)
  2. Feeling of genuine independence in self This needs to be cultivated (not a personality of withdrawal – escape – aloofness or superiority) – Learning the skill of staying with self under pressures.
  3. Communication Learning clarity in speaking / listening skills – actually hearing and articulating. - A willingness to remain focused in an arena of disruptive distractions.
  4. Life skills Learning the basics: (e.g. cooking / cleaning / washing / ironing / banking / computer /maintenance / hosting - social skills & etiquette).
  5. Public speaking skills Learning to keep one’s authenticity in small or large gatherings. (e.g. Community; family & day to day interactions.)
  6. Presentation of self Develop genuine self confidence (no pretences).
  7. Negotiation skills Ensuring no manipulation, coercion, seduction, etc.
  8. Team building Learning the ability to see and hear the need and being able to work with a cooperative approach and constructive attitude to completion of the task or process.
  9. Individual responsibility Learning to respond rather than emotionally reacting to others requests.
  10. Respect for self and others Learning to recognize genuineness in all situations.
  11. Self appreciation and appreciation of others Ensuring no dilution or dismissal of self or others.
  12. Enquiring Learning enquiry through invitation not interrogation
  13. Family functioning Gaining an understanding of a functional family.
  14. Accurate reporting Learning to report with no exaggeration / build up/ emotive issues / etc.
  15. Organisational skills Developing skills for planning of tasks and activities.
  16. Learning to hear Learning one "can't hear what you can't hear."
  17. Informed risk taking – Learning to make mature choices and personally deciding on individual outcomes (any out of control substance use is like a game of Russian roulette, yet people originally participating do not embrace it as a risk).
